As We May Think: What is the future of communication?

Things I expect to see in the future (and would be upset if they are never created.)

>Laptops with built in hologram sensors so that when we’re video chatting with people, not only will they see us on the screen, but a hologram projection of our entire body will be right in front of them. While on the topic of holograms, imagine if you could save the professor’s entire lecture and have his hologram and chalkboard playback right in your room?

>Writing utensils that store every stroke the user makes. This information can be stored on the pen or pencil so that when a button is pushed, the pen/pencil will start writing the saved data on its own. A PEN THAT WRITES YOUR ESSAY FOR YOU!

>Cords that attach to the sides of your head and type sentences to your laptop based on what you’re thinking. (Just don’t have a dirty mind.)

>Two words: Downloadable food. Let’s say famous chef Emeril was making a caramel soufflĂ© and you’d KILL to know how it tasted. Well, Emeril can use a platform to upload the taste onto and have it emailed out to all of his viewers. The viewer can then download an edible image of the soufflĂ© and EAT IT! Why order Chinese from that crusty old shop down the street when you can get real chinese food from China! (Potential Danger: Hopefully the food wont have a virus.)

>Jetsons style teleportation tubes. No more cars, nuff said.

“Jane! Stop this crazy thing!”

Amber I think this is so cool! I like to think that would make life so much easier if the pen could write the essay for you! Even the thought recording device would be awesome!

  2. I never thought about downloadable food before, that seems so interesting to have. I also agree about the hologram sensors.

  3. Holograms would be so convenient! Being able to see the person you are talking to up in 3D form would be amazing, so much for screens!
Pens that save your handwriting could save us so much time! However, do you think there will be a need for pens and paper? Who knows!
Downloadable food could enhance our eating habits or it could go the other way as well haha!
    Great ideas!

  4. when I read the idea of pens writing essays for you i was impressed by the idea. However, I then thought, a step further, what if there is no written work, everything will be digital? Also, America does not need downloadable food…. America just does not need it.

  5. I actually think everyone of these is actual not only possible already, but happening.

    1) Hologram: TUPAC!
    2) Utensils recording movements:
    3) Recording your dreams
    4) Racing through Tubes

To be honest, I think that we won’t go in the direction of holograms, but rather, the Oculus Rift route. The technology exists to immerse yourself in the event rather than try to immerse the event into your situation. What will definitely happen over the next 10 years or so is that different versions of the Oculus Rift will slim down and become widely affordable. But let’s think even bigger than that.

Picture this: Google Glass and Oculus Rift pull their technology together and eventually create invisible contact lenses that allow you to see anything you want. With this you could enter a space so immersive that you believe you are actually in the same room as someone you’re talking to hundreds of miles away. You could even see exactly what someone else is seeing straight from their eyes to yours. Hand held devices could become obsolete when everything that you need to see is already in your line of vision.
